BBC 7

I have reently been making use of my broadband connection at home to listen to the radio. This is afterall one of the reasons behind getting the sort of internet connection I do have….

The BBC broadcasts over normal radio on 5 national channels, and also has a number of digital stations some of which can also be listened to via the internet. The one I am currently interested in is Radio 7 as I like the entertainment programs that are found on Radio 4.

Bizarrly this now means I am istening to some very old raio stiuff like the goons, and also listening to episodes of dad’s army (though i think that is just the soundtrack to the TV programme. Still, its entertainment.

This is not a software problem

Saturday I decided to get on with upgrading my Linux box to Mandrake 9.2 Everything was going fine, until the upgrade just stopped. Oh dear. My CD Drive suddenly stopped working. It turnes out there is a bit of a problem with some drives, not just ones marked LG nut, my Compaq one too.

I tried the suggested fix. but to no avail. so it as off to PC World today to get a new drive. Apparnetly the bug only affects CD drives, not RW drives, this is due to the bug being the (possibly negligent) reuse of the command instruction for a RW drive that is not needed by a CD-ROM drive to mess with the FirmWare. Grrr.

On the plus side i suppose i now have a CD burner on my Linux box. which probably cost a quarter of the price for the one in my PC box bought about 3 years ago. Oh, and the one in the linux box is, of course, faster

Keeping up with the Bloggers

Last year there was a rash of people with WebLogs. Some have fallen by the wayside. Andy A was probably one of the first to come to life, he has now moved onto a series of other things… whilst Sam is back, after a temporary absence.

As I mentioned before, Gary got Bored and started a weblog. Ant has recently become the IdleOne so I have added a feed on this site. (I didnt even bother just hacking his website…)

If Adam L had more than just titles in his feed on imperialviolet it would look alot better on my site…

This all leads to what I spent much of my evening doing. That is producing a Feed from my Weblog for some peoples enjoyment….

And finally Giles is the Prime minister! (See Buffy and Little Britain…)

This is the Night Train, Crossing the Border

Spent tonight at college. whihc was nice, to see people and all. Glad I got there, despite thick fog at this end, (and much racing around to pick up car from anual service. mainly by bike though) and a terminal puncture on the home straight to the station. Fixed the puncture with a little help (and hindence) from a friend and enjoyed the bar

got the 2330 from Kings Cross heading towards Leeds. But I got off in Peterborough. Of Course. Saw a Mail Train there, and lots of men waiting, and then loading MAIL SKATES into mini wagons for transport to the sorting offices.

Peterborough is very quiet on a Tuesday Night, except on the very main roads there was no traffic. and even then, only a very little. Not sure if i prefer that, or the madness of london. It was odd to only have the wind in my ears

The Importance of Being Eddie

Its week 5 of “The Rest of My Life ™” that is to say,the long work filled bit that generally comes between student life and retirement….

So anyway, its week 5, and my PC arrived today. I now have access to work email. My very own email address infact. Not that I am going to tell you what it is here…. But it did raise a question as to what my name is. And here is where it could get a little confusing.

Officially i am Edward. Thats what it says on my passport, and my quaifications. but ofcourse that really is a bit long isnt it? I mean it could be shorter. People variously shorten it to either "Eddie" or "Ed" the problems start when people ask me which I am.

Its easy for the official stuff. That is always Edward’s domain. But the rest of the time even I am not one hundred percent sure what it is. Needless to say I answer to any of the three (and to "Ant" sometimes too, but that is annother story) but generally in spoken language I am likelly to say my name is "Ed" and if i write it it comes out as "Eddie". Doing a search on Google for instances of me out there under different names shows that different groups (or individuals) call me different things. Of course, somepeople now get confused, believeing the Eddie Brown and Ed Brown to be possibly two different people…

But anyway, this is how i am now, in writing at least, Eddie Brown at work now.
