Completion

Its (be)Coming Home

As a "Life of Eddie" post, this lets you know I will soon have my new home. ooooh! Because it is finished, and we just need to hand over the money, and the legal stuff gets sorted out too of course.

In this case I think next weekend me and mum are going shopping, although I think it is more for her advice than the contents of her purse! its only really curtains (and something to hang them off of) and lamp shades that are needed. Everything else is either being taken from my current house (whihc is an unfurnished rent) or from my parents (due to their ongoing decorating.

Anyway, the above is the cause of 99% of my smiles right now… and there are quite a few of them

To Do Soon

Things to make and do

This week is shooting on by. I seem to be being kept amused. Still need to go the the wall as didnt go tonight. Need to sleep. Need to work out way to IC, and then on to Pompey, and specifically of course the IBIS. Packing can wait for now….

Not everything always makes sense.

as a rant - I would like to whinge about the incompatibility between my Philips webcam, and Mandrake Linux. but its really not worth the hassel. I think I should let it slide.

Final to do is to add some more functionality to this site. Yes, i could install something out of a box, but thats not the point.

and finally…

I really should have worn gloves when chopping the chillie peppers. I have learnt my lesson now…..

Targets Met

Pointless workflow

I came to work at 7.30 this morning (I am going to disregard the going off site for two hours that I also did, although that comes later) I was also in at the weekend (which annoyingly is now last week, and not this week) but my work load has just dropped. So I am going to have to work on personal motivation and my list of jobs todo.

But my point is that my time and attendance measurements encourage clock watching. I have to work 37 hours regardless of my workload, and if i need to do extra hours, then I do them. Now i dont have much problem with the latter, but the immovable-force nature of my official work pattern does irritate me time and again.

I would much rather go home in an hour than an hour and 45 minutes…

Anyway, I need to go and chase some work that will end up with me being at work at 6am one saturday.

Floorspace

Why does it feel like a landmark?

For the past couple of weeks I have been consolidating my belongings ready to move. Well, consolidating some of them… I have no intention to live out of a series of boxes just yet, so its largly sorting out paper at this stage.

Some stuff will probably go in the bin, but it is largly a filing, sorting and packing exercise. The knack as I see it is to organise stuff so that when i get to m new flat I can work ut where anything might be. With the extra room space is initially not going to be a problem, the boxes can just all go into the second room, until they are propperly sorted out.

Last nigth did feel like an achievement when I managed to sort things sufficiently so that most of my stuff now sits under the stairs, giving me the lounge floorspace again. Which is nice, and I know it is only transitory, but it does give me a space with which to start again….

I need to buy more filing boxes for the paperwork, and pack some more of it away, and then it is time to start putting excess clothing (well painting clothing, and the like) into suitcases, and getting to the back of my built in cupboard.

Time to Go

Just to make it seem more real, I yesterday handed in notice on my current rented house. This means I now have a date I need to move by, and if my new flat isnt finished, then that is going to be a case of moving to my parents place. It would be much better to move direct to my own place, less packing will be required, and a lot less milage…

Way of the Bike

Some discoveries on a sunny if draughty Sunday

I was not going to fall for the same trap as yesterday. Insted of waiting for the rain, I was off out on my bike, by about 11am and heading south into a strong wind. I just about managed to stay upright whilst suddenly realsising I now had a cycle computor to play with…

It turns out my typical speed would be in the region of 16mph. Although this went down quite a bit later in my journey when i started going down some rather dodgy paths…

Having cycled to aproximatly Waterside @ Hampton Vale i started looking for cycle tracks. Insted I found a useless gravel covered path. Yes, it might look nice… but it is rather pointless. It seems that the random road between the two current hamptons is a cycle route. I then went in the back route to Serpentine Green, and around and onto the cycle paths there. These run back to the A15 (but with an annoying habit of having lots of side roads to cross)

Net result, I have found a better route between New Home, and Work. although there is a very bad blind corner to cross one road… at least the paths are reaonably well built.

I also visited part of Ferry Meadow. Some whwere for another day’s exploration I think. I really need a map of the local area.

Rising Damp

Its a bit wet…

The Healthy Eating thing, along with the plants downstairs, and me needing to sometimes dry some washing is all leading to one thing in my house. Water, and quite a bit of it.

I suppose it is an argos job to sort it out. I suppose it shouldnt be so bad in my new place (can do drying in the familly bathroom…. and not so many plants) but it is a little annoying. and not helping stuff dry…

New Wheels

One purchase down…

Long standing readers of these ramblings, may remember my efforts over the last few years to find myself a new bycycle. Today I managed to succeed in this, but not with the result I had intended

I was meaning to buy a Raleigh Stratos. But Raliegh do not seem to realise that they make them. I did find one, but a bit on the big side… So anyway, I went today to show my dad the bike I was thinking about (yeah, I hoped he could then look around for me whilst he was out and about) and my eyes fell on a touring bike by Dawes

The bike I chose fits the bill of what I was looking for. It has two wheels, and it has drop handle bars. It also has luggage carriers, I do not remember it having front luggage racks, but then I do not remember paying list price :-)

Now all I have to wait for is its delivery (by espace, of course…) on Tuesday. Except I probably will not go out on it, I will go climbing insted.

Interesting Maps

A surprisingly Interesting Program

Some TV presenters are really dull. Some subjects are really dull. But a dull subject can be transformed by a presenter that has a real enthusiasm for the subject.

Bored one evening, and with nothing else on TV, I found my self watching a programme about maps called "Map Man" how dull could that be I thought. But the guy presenting it is actually quite engaging, and the way he makes a map several hundered years old relevant, and important is interesting. To me anyway.

Beats watching programmes about muppets buying houses abroad….

Differences

New Life vs. Old Life

In my old life I sometimes went on spending sprees. A large proportion of these was attributable to a certian large event in the summer term of 2002, but on the whole it was a world where toys on loan, and new toys when we decided to buy them were good things.

In my new life things are ratehr different. People lending toys means I have to have a reason to use them. I only have half a reason for getting toys on demo, i.e. i want to try them, but i dont have an imediate application…. Having a demo also tends to need justifying the inevitable costs that will be incurred. usually someoen elses time. Compare that to the situation where demo kit used to mean a cost saving!

As for buying new toys…. I used to make up fantastic business cases for new theatre type toys, and believe me, i think I still can. But when it comes to these new things, its a little more tricky… I cannot predict what my new customers will do. And that is always the tricky bit.

On Tour

Oh, in other news, it seems the Eddie Brown Engineering Experience is going on tour to deepest North London again. excellent. Although yet again I am stressing over the planning for it, and this is coupled with my previous aim-at-foot-and-pull-trigger incident, which means that I am now trying to bodge my way around a previous bodge.

Isnt engineering great? Its fantatsic. I am pretty much doign soemthing that I want to do. Its almost engaging me, whihc is nice, cos that is what I need.
