The allotment has not been a huge success. Its been mainly a matter of time, and not having any at the right time. When I was in Spain, I should have been making regular trips to the plot, sowing seeds (Which would have been best done in trays and then planted in) and keeping the weeds down.
As it was I got back from Spain to a sea of weeds, and its got somewhat like that again now I have got back from my summer holiday, there is some veg that is OK though, the carrots and beet root seem to be doing OK, not fantastic, but they will produce something, and there are some potatoes under ground (even if the main crop has wilted…)
There may even be some courgettes later, and some beans, and maybe one or two peas. The problem for the peas and beans has been that it was very dry when they were planted, and then they had to fend for themselves for two weeks. Not a great deal of germination. Certainly not a lot of plants to show for it.
But, I think it will have been worth it in the end. I certainly want a garden with my new house, whether I bother with an allotment is another matter, its a case of needing to be able to easily get down there and spend time keeping it under control throughout the year, obviously if its in your back garden this is easier!
I may have to pay to have the plot next year though so that I can harvest all the crops… I expect to still be harvesting once I have moved north, will just have to pop down on the weekends, but i need to do that anyway.
