Ghost Map

My new road almost exists on Google maps. The streets are shown, but not the names.

Its kinda funny comparing the view in hybrid mode. Old photo. New roads.

Taking the long(ger) way home

Things were not so bad when i made my way home from scouts last night. Scissett barely looked like it had been as bad as it had during the day. The river was certainly below road level!

It was only between Carlton and Shafton that I had any problems. On Shaw road the signs said it was closed ahead, but i fancied a look anyway, and was confronted with the pictured scene.

It didn’t look deep. But i certainly wasn’t going to risk it. The road actually bends round to the left once through the bridge, and then goes up a steep hill.

This morning I had to find a new route to work, shame i didnt have the 1:50000 with me last night. I don’t think i took the most direct route!

Apparently there is a bit of water out there. Suddenly most people left work in the hope that they will be able to get home. there are just three of us left. I am staying on for scouts…. then hopefully it will be ok.

Rain seems to have eased up at the moment in any case….

Breakthrough?

I spent the weekend as a Checkpoint Monkey on Ilkley Moor (Baht ‘At) it was mostly successful. and it only started really raining about lunchtime today. Some of the checkpoints were quite pleasant places to sit and read for an hour in the sun….

Last night, we thought we had made a breakthrough. I am finding it really hard adapting to the new age ranges that I am “working” with.

We had a moment of revelation. And the guys went off to bed. Two of us sat by the fire. Happy. Things reallywere turning out right.

Then we heard voices. All three had decamped from their tent and were playing on the rope swing. at 11pm.

Gone midnight, I crawled into my tent…..

The good news though remains. They have gone from very little to no map knowledge and ability, to being able to look after themselves on expeditions. the camp craft is about there too. They would certainly put most D of E people I have experienced to shame!

Time Synchronisation on Windows XP / Server 2003

This worked for me to sysnchronise the clients, but i also needed to make sure one server knew that it was meant to be providing the definitive time by doing this.

That something so simple results in looking through three of four different articles, and then just trying things out anyway is beyond me.

Of course we are using Workgroups and not a Domain or anything cleaver like that….

Which is probably why all my nodes don’t seem to always see each other. Mind you, a hosts file soon fixed that. And allowed a couple of hosts to resolve to the same address whilst I was about it too!

Making up for lost time?

Thankfully, I no longer have the problem that Dilbert has been experiencing today.

A Dilbert Comic

Which is a relief.

Its not quite a year from Peterborough yet. I’ll have to look back on it in a months time I think. I do know that this time last year I had decided the best way of working out some of my notice was to go on holiday for a couple of weeks….

Music to watch the work go by

Oh Dear. M1Live has gone. maybe it will come back. but for now it is gone. damn.

So I suppose I’ll just have to type in the names of bands that Gary talks about into last.fm when I need some music to work to when I am working at home then.

Bust My Ass

An amusing hour was spent watching a documentary on BBC3 last night, part of their Mischief series. Bust My Ass basically showed how easy it is to get arrested for use of bad language and being overheard by a police officer, or by wearing a t-shirt with a political statement on it.

Along with Mark Thomas, and his Mass Lone Demonstrations (sadly the hilarious radio 4 programme is no longer available to listen again), and a geek arrested on the tube it really make you proud to be British, doesn’t it?

Roll on Holidays

In Just under a month we will be on holiday. Camping in Cornwall in case you were wondering.

And to help make it seem as though we are going sooner, yesterday evening whilst my tea went cold, I was using the Travelodge website to book a couple of nights accommodation for the journey down. This is mainly because we are going via Longleat in Wiltshire. This way we can leave from Barnsley just as soon as Vicki finishes work (at 7pm) and drive for a few hours before stopping, then a couple of hours more driving in the morning, a day out, and another couple of hours driving in the evening. I don’t see the point rushing for a camp site during the weekend….

Update: And in case anyone is wondering, No I am not going through the monkey enclosure again. I like my car too much….
