I wonder if a Nokia 6300i with wi-fi ability will let me use hot spots in say McDonalds, or on National Express trains for a bit of light browsing…. Anyone know?

Both the National Express and McDonalds wifi are of the type that requires you to visit some landing page (usually for T’s & C’s and sometimes you need to register/login) in your browser before you get free access. Whether or not you can use them will depend on whether the browser in the phone can display that landing page well enough for you to click the right option/enter the right details.
Most mobile web browsers are pretty good these days so this shouldn’t be a problem. If the built in browser does struggle you can also try the free opera mini browser available from http://www.opera.com/mini/
6300i doesn’t run Symbian software, so whilst we are now all part of Nokia I can’t get hold of one easily to try this out I’m afraid.
