This might be my revised website. New choice of theme, and the upgraded wordpress 3.2.1. I think it’s time to start removing pugins (at least on the front page) and clean it up a little.

then i want to start looking at my other weblog….

However i still don’t know why my website, and hosting provider cannot be accessed easilly from home, it is really slow (it appears that i can only transfer data at 8kB) I have had to be a little sneaky to finally get access to backup and then upgrade the website.

Twittering via SMS

I have for a few years been posting to twitter via SMS, using +447624801423. Having just got back from a voyage aboard Stavros S Niarchos, i looked at Facebook, which should have status updates from twitter, and nothing had appeared. Odd.

It turns out twitter now uses the number 07624800379 – i am not going to use the short code as that costs me money, the long number comes out of my text bundle….

So no-one heard about the fun i was having whilst away, clearing out the fore peak store. Shame.

Firefox, Javascript and IE-Tab

Recentyl, it appears Javascript has been a bit broken in my Firefox installation. Today I realised that Firefox has been updated to 3.6, so i got the update, knowing that IE-Tab would not be available, but that there is a new adin, called Coral IE Tab which is compatible with Firefox 3.6, and so I can both use firefox, and websites that insist on Internet Exploder.

Book Shopping

Amazon is not the only place to buy books from.

Whilst google product search allows me to easily find prices for products at loads of places, shopping for books used to be a bit of a grind.

For the last couple of years, when i am buying books I have been using Book Brain to search for the cheapest provider – and with many places now not charging for delivery, its almost a case of just buying each individual items from the cheapest place.

Where do you fit?

WordPress 2.9 (Again)

earlier I said

I have done my almost annual update of wordpress. On this occasion, i backed up, deactivated all plugins and used the auto update. i then tried to reactivate all plugins, this muked up something behind the scenes, so i disabbled them all by renaming the plugins directory! when i activateded them one by one, and updated a few it all worked.

Oh, and i have learned that i have the “other” ad rotator plugin. but that is fixed now too.

If anyone sees anything that is broken, please do let me know!

and then it all went horribly wrong, so i had to go back to my Database backup from this morning.

“Now Reading” plugin appears to be broken in WordPress 2.9, so I am now using “Now Reading Reloaded”

so i think it all works now. however do let me know if you think other wise!

Office two thousand and heaven or hell

We are currently embracing Office 2007 at work. Its an odd experience. whilst i really like some of the functionality in Outlook, and don’t really feel too offended by outlook and word, it doesn’t help that I don;t know where absolutely everything is. There is definitely a learning curve….

I currently wonder how much of an advantage it can be. Which just about sums me up currently, laziness rocks.

Is there much advantage in the new .docx file format? do I lose much by remaining backwards compatible? hmmm. choices, choices.

Colibri

I have been using Colibri for a while to make it easier to open new programmes. Insead of using my mouse to hunt around the start menu, or having 1001 shortcuts on my desktop, I can now hit CTRL+Space and then start typing the name of the program i want to launch.

Today, after a brief look at the Tips&Tricks for Colibri and afetr downloading SQLLite Browser I have added a new shortcuts folder, and now can make links to frequently visited places on the companies different file shares.

Makes my life easier.

Gmail Not Loading in Firefox

The standard view of gmail was not working in firefox. I was not too fussed immediatly, as I have better things to do and the HTML version was working… However, looking for the answer via Google led me to a forum and the advice

Clear your cache. Tools –> Options –> Advanced –> Network, Clear Now button.

Which did the trick for me.
