Obviously, I should not watch the news – its only going to be depressing. But I wonder how much truth there is in the following quote for a story on El Reg

Of course flu is nothing to be, umm, sneezed at. It kills about 1,500 people in the UK every winter – but of course that is dull old people flu, not this headline-friendly new flu.

Meanwhile the lower bound could be only twice as bad mortality for “swine flu” as for common or garden flu

And the NHS website is quite good at giving a good science background as to why the science is not generating real answers just yet

Oh, and I think the same people who comment on BBC’s Have your say, are now commenting on the NHS website too. Is it me or is it bizzare that what I thought would be a public information website with *facts* somehow is a place for public opinion instead.

Well, its one way of realising a desire for a role in an RSC Play.

People who want to buy a couple of CDs cheaply should pop over to eBay. Looks interesting….

A search on Google News for “Emley show cancelled” returns a number of news stories in the main stream media (and the main stream parts of the main stream media at that) which add the Emley Show to the list of events cancelled due to Foot and Mouth.

Foot and Mouth emerged last Friday. I had already been driving past signs saying the show was cancelled for a week by then. I can hear the black helicopters circling already. The real reason (as some news outlets correctly reported, therefore making the inclusion of its cancellation rather pointless in their pieces) according to the Emley show website is that the fields used for the show (and associated parking) have received quite a lot of water of late, for a while holding a small lake near the bottom.

But one does wonder why suddenly lots of places reported it. maybe because their website shows up in a google for “Show cancelled”? No, that cannot be right. They are all because of flooding…. Odd.

Meanwhile, the Eye always makes good reading

An amusing hour was spent watching a documentary on BBC3 last night, part of their Mischief series. Bust My Ass basically showed how easy it is to get arrested for use of bad language and being overheard by a police officer, or by wearing a t-shirt with a political statement on it.

Along with Mark Thomas, and his Mass Lone Demonstrations (sadly the hilarious radio 4 programme is no longer available to listen again), and a geek arrested on the tube it really make you proud to be British, doesn’t it?

Photo reactive glasses might not be so good in the dark, according to part of the MAIB report into the loss of the yacht Ouzo.

The lookout?s photochromic glasses were sent to University College London?s Institute of Ophthalmology to assess whether they might have had an adverse effect upon his night vision.

The glasses were examined and a report was prepared (Annex 1), which concluded that the optical transmission of the lenses was no more than 80% efficient and, taking into account all of the other known factors, was probably less at the time of the accident. This compares to 94.7% and 99.4% optical transmittance of ordinary uncoated and coated lenses, respectively. This was a startling result as the consequences of such a reduction in night vision had not been fully appreciated by opticians and ophthalmologists before the investigation of this accident.

That is quite a surprise to me, though i do not wear photo reactive glasses all that much, they tend to take quite a while before i feel comfortable outside, or go amazingly dark on overcast days…. I guess its another example of using the correct tool for the job, i.e. sunglasses for bright sunshine, and normal glasses for the rest of the time.

Its Halloween today apparently. Beggers on the doorstep, and all that.

At least the telegraph reporting about Halloween is amusing.

… Outsorced to India anyone? Although it seems that many students are getting into outsourceing early in their carears. Well, its one response to market forces.

The article talks of systems to prevent this sort of cheating. I am sure that simple plagerism is easy to catch, but if each person gets someone else to do their coursework, then its going to be harder….
