A few weeks ago, I caused a little discussion in my office when I said that I could see how a small business employer may not want to employ women due to the risk of them going on maternity leave.

Feel the steam rising inside you? before you explode think about what I am saying. Think about manageing risk. Think about what an employer of a small business is trying to achieve when they take on a member of staff.

And then today I read an article on the Devil’s Kitchen whihc mentions a UKIP member’s comments. Other previous posts on the devils kitchen should be equally inflamitory.

Ah, the joy of debate, eh? Of course discrimination is wrong. But life is about balances. The difficult bit is to look behind the reasons for a statement. And you are probably misunderstanding what I mean right now….

 

Its Halloween today apparently. Beggers on the doorstep, and all that.

At least the telegraph reporting about Halloween is amusing.

 

It seems that the government could allow a free vote on the issue of smoking in public places, the thinking being that this will lead to a ban in all pubs. In theory market forces should make places turn non smoking. after all, enough of us would rather not spend all evening surrounded by smoke. But at the end of the day this does not seem to be happening. This legislation will restrict some people and their "right" to smoke, but it will give the rest of us the right to breath clean air. Excellent. Assuming it goes through that is…..
